Lighting installation in Harlow

Most lighting work is straightforward. Two things turn a simple job into an expensive one — loft insulation clearance and bathroom zones — and both are worth understanding before you collect quotes, because they explain why two quotes for "the same" job differ by hundreds.

The loft insulation problem

Harlow's housing is dominated by post-war new-town stock, and most of it has been insulated at some point since. That matters for downlights: a fitting not rated to be covered has to be kept clear of insulation, or fitted with a loft cap, because covered non-rated fittings trap heat. Look for an IC rating (insulation coverable) on anything quoted. If an installer plans to retrofit non-rated downlights into an insulated ceiling and says nothing about caps or clearance, that is the question to ask before you accept the price.

What is notifiable, and what is not

Typical costs

JobTypical rangeNotes
Extra lighting point, existing circuit£80–£150 per pointCheaper in multiples on one visit
Downlight retrofit, one room£300–£700Depends on fitting spec and ceiling access
Outdoor / security lighting£150–£400 per fittingMore if a new supply is needed
New lighting circuit£350–£700Notifiable; includes certification

Emergency lighting in commercial premises is a different discipline with its own periodic testing regime — if that is what you need, say so when you enquire, because it is inspection work rather than an installation job.

Get lighting quotes for your Harlow property

Tell us the rooms, the fittings you have in mind, and whether the loft is insulated — that last detail moves the quote more than anything else.

What we will not do: we do not sell your details on, we do not add you to a marketing list, and we do not require a phone number. If you would rather not be called, leave the phone out — email is enough.
